The Specialty Instructor is responsible for leading classes in a specialized program area, such as Pilates, Yoga, Cycling, etc. The Specialty Instructor will instruct quality classes and provide excellent customer service to members and program participants in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Plan and instruct progressive classes in a specialty area; maintain current certification in specialty area.
• Provide positive, specific cueing during class to ensure optimal workout.
• Be available to participants before and after class to help with equipment set up, answer questions, etc.
• Inform class participants of YMCA programs and other announcements as requested by Director of Healthy Living
• Observe participants form and other behaviors to ensure safety, discuss individual progress with participants.
• Motivate and encourage class and program participation.
• Set up and take down own class equipment and report equipment problems to supervisor.
• Ensure safe and effective classes; responding to and reporting any accidents or incidents.
• Maintain working knowledge of fitness industry and YMCA trends to provide effective information and training to members.
• Keep accurate class attendance records.
• Be able to respond and follow YMCA policies and procedures in emergency situations.
• Any other duty as assigned by supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Formal training and certification in the specialty class being taught.
• CPR, First Aid, AED certifications within 60 days of hire (YMCA provided).
• Preferred at least one year experience in specialty format being taught.
• Excellent customer service and communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to individually lead a class and motivate participants.
• Ability to set up, move and store class equipment.
• Ability to interact and build relationships with people of all ages and backgrounds.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to instruct assigned classes and perform associated physical activities. Must be able to perform all physical aspects of the position; including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 lbs. at a time.
